Pleasant Woodson White

Born in 1820 Pleasant Woodson White was the son of a Methodist minister. He studied and graduated from Emory College in 1848 and began practicing law in Quincy, Florida.

In 1849 White married Joseph Leonard Smallwood’s niece, Emily, also purchasing Smallwood’s home in Quincy, Florida, which is located at West King Street and Madison Street (SR65) in Gadsden County.

White was commissioned a Major in the Confederate Army in 1861 and as Chief Commissary Officer for Florida commanded the depot at Quincy.

White became active in politics and served as Judge of the Second Judicial Circuit from 1869-1879. He also served as Commissioner of Lands and Immigration from 1881-1885.

White died in 1919. The White House in Quincy, Florida is marked with a Florida Historical Marker.
